Solid residues and effluents from processing fruits (peaches, pomegranate, grapes, oranges etc) contain various compounds, some of them of great dietary and commercial value. However, such residues are either unexploited or become sources of serious environmental pollution.
In parallel, in the past two decades, significant progress has been made in the development of various novel types of methods; e.g. membrane technology, bio-technological methods, advanced oxidation processes, etc. These methods or combinations thereof allow the integrated treatment of natural by-products as well as of related polluting effluents toward the recovery of marketable products and/or energy and of clean water for reuse, thus effectively achieving environmental protection and sustainability.
This Symposium is targeted, among others, to:
- Demonstrate, with specific examples, the great potential and benefits of applying innovative methods for integrated management (and exploitation) of natural by-products and of related effluents.
- Facilitate the interaction of various interested stakeholders from the fields of agriculture, products processing, process equipment manufacturers with researchers and technology providers/users.
- Contribute to the establishment of modern concepts and approaches for integrated treatment of natural by-products and related effluents thus ensuring environmental protection.
