LEFHLaboratory of Environmental Fuels/Biofuels and Hydrocarbons

Mission

The Laboratory of Environmental Fuels/Biofuels and Hydrocarbons (LEFH) is a catalytic reaction engineering laboratory that carries out fundamental and applied research in the area of refining and bio-refining catalytic technologies. Emphasis is given on the development of catalytic processes for the production of fuels and chemicals with low carbon footprint according to the principles of circular economy (low-carbon conventional fuels, renewable and bio-based fuels, renewable chemicals from biomass and waste streams etc .).

Research focus

LEFH’s research focuses on:

  • the development and optimization of industrial catalytic processes on small, medium and pilot-scale;
  • the synthesis of novel and improvement of existing commercial catalysts;
  • the advanced characterization of catalytic materials and the establishment of catalyst properties – performance relations;
  • the investigation of catalyst deactivation and the development of regeneration processes and
  • the modelling and simulation of catalytic reactors and processes.

Moreover, LEFH offers advanced technical services to the petroleum-based and bio-based industries and catalyst manufacturing companies.

Main scientific directions

The main scientific directions of LEFH are:

  • Optimization of commercial catalytic processes for the production of environmentally-friendly conventional fuels in integrated refineries (fluid catalytic cracking, hydroprocessing, hydrocracking, isomerization, reforming;
  • Development of novel processes for the production of 2nd and 3rd generation biofuels and the upgrading of low-quality biofuels (in-situ and ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of biomass, upgrading of heavy bio-based fuels, co-processing of low-quality biofuels with conventional oils in existing refinery processes);
  • Exploitation of waste streams (CO2, plastics, organic wastes, end-of-life tires etc.) for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals via catalytic technologies in the context of circular economy
  • Development of catalytic processes for the production of biochemicals from various hydrolysates (fermentation broths, hydrolysates from biomass pretreatment technologies etc)
  • Development of innovative organosolve-based biomass pretreatment technologies
  • Process intensification for the efficient conversion of CO2 to high-added-value products
  • Catalytic processes for the reduction of SΟx, ΝΟx and CO emissions from the flue gases of FCC unit regenerators.
