Mission

Geo-Resources, Energy and Environmental Management (GREEN) team aims to facilitate through its research the transition to sustainable energy, the exploitation of geo-resources, as well as the improvement of environmental conditions. GREEN seeks to provide added valued, efficient energy solutions for a better future, delivered with expertise and teamwork.

Research focus

GREEN’s research focus is mainly on:

  • Confronting geological issues regarding the energy and the environment.
  • Confronting environmental issues of mine remediation.
  • Confronting environmental issues of water, air and solid pollutants.
  • Promoting a scientific approach to critical metals.
  • Development of CO₂ and H₂ storage methods.
  • Scientific approach to slope stability issues.

Main scientific directions

  • CCUS / Hydrogen storage techniques – petrological and petrophysical characterization and modelling.
  • Climate change, sustainable energy transition and identification of geological sites for energy storage
  • Geotechnical characterization of mining areas – safety analysis.
  • Ground improvement, monitoring, identification of problems and risk analysis.
  • Identification of past and current climate conditions.
  • Identification of potential uses for spoil dumps of coal and lignite mines.
  • Identification and development of novel approaches regarding GIScience.
  • Mineralogical, geochemical and petrographic characterization of soil material – REE distribution and characterization and quantification of alteration products.
  • Critical raw materials research, with emphasis on REE and PGE related minerals.
  • Petrological modeling of recycling/natural materials for construction applications.
  • Development of porous materials of controlled, hierarchical porosity via chemical activation of oxide mixtures.
  • Hydrogeochemisty – Hydrogeology and Groundwater resources management and Evaluation of the impact of groundwater changes.
  • Hydrogeochemical investigation of contaminated land.
  • Impact assessment of changes in surface water on the stability of structures.
  • Environmental and health risk assessment of groundwater bodies.
  • Geochemical modelling for the assessment of water rock interaction processes.
  • Microstructural, porosimetric, heavy metal characterization and upgrade of power production by-products.
  • Environmental remediation processes.
  • Geoheritage with emphasis on recognized UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
