Solid residues and effluents from processing fruits (peaches, pomegranate, grapes, oranges etc) contain various compounds, some of them of great dietary and commercial value. However, such residues are either unexploited or become sources of serious environmental pollution.

In parallel, in the past two decades, significant progress has been made in the development of various novel types of methods; e.g. membrane technology, bio-technological methods, advanced oxidation processes, etc. These methods or combinations thereof allow the integrated treatment of natural by-products as well as of related polluting effluents toward the recovery of marketable products and/or energy and of clean water for reuse, thus effectively achieving environmental protection and sustainability.

The Info-day titled “Hydrogen Technology and Fuel Cells: Investment prospects in an emerging market” will be held on Tuesday 12 March 2013, at 9.30 a.m., at the "Vergina" Auditorium of CERTH, within the framework of the project
Hydrogen Economy Cooperation Network for Research - Public Awareness - Business Opportunities across Greek-Bulgarian borders – HYDECON" under the "European Territorial Cooperation" Operational Programme Greece - Bulgaria 2007-2013.

The info-day includes:

  • a short presentation of the HYDECON project
  • 4 presentations based on the study “Hydrogen Technology related Business opportunities in the regions of Greece and Bulgaria” which was conducted on behalf of the HYDECON project
  • a presentation, by the manufacturing company, of the design and the assembly of the H2 fuel Cell Scooter within the framework of the HYDECON project
  • a guided visit of all participants at the “Photovoltaic Hydrogen production Unit” which was installed in CERTH for the needs of the HYDECON project

All businesses, professionals, researchers and students, with interest in the area of H2 technologies are invited to participate in the Info day.

Biofuels for Sustainable Development of Southern Europe

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to cordially invite you to participate in the International Conference on Biofuels for Sustainable Development of Southern Europe (Bio4SuD) to be held in Thessaloniki (Greece) on 19-20 November, 2012. This conference is organized as part of the BIOFUELS-2G demonstration project funded by the European Union and the LIFE+ Programme.

The Bio4SuD conference aims to:

  • highlight promising R&D activities in the fields of biofuels production
  • present demonstration projects of key 2nd and 3rd generation biofuels production technologies
  • promote networking between academic and industrial stakeholders and
  • initiate Private-Public Partnerships (PPPs).

A key component of the BIOFUELS-2G project is a hydrolytic solar hydrogen production unit, which was designed and constructed in CERTH to demonstrate the potential of employing renewable hydrogen for increasing the sustainability of 2nd generation biofuels production. Driven by this incentive, the H2Life conference aims to:

  • Highlight promising R&D activities in the fields of renewable hydrogen production
  • Outline recent demonstration projects of highlighting hydrogen utilization as energy carrier
  • Promote networking between academic and industrial stakeholders and
  • Initiate Private-Public Partnerships (PPPs) on the above issues

The agenda includes:

  • LIFE program Open Day presentation
  • Special Anniversary Happening
  • Biofuels-2G Project presentation
  • R&D – Demo Projects presentations on hydrogen economy and production
  • Roundtable discussion on the future of renewable H2 and hydrogen economy

During the event a tour at the hydrogen production site will be held with a live demonstration of the Biofuels-2G production process. This event is employed as 20th year anniversary event of LIFE program.
