PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

BACKGROUND

Substituting biofuels for fossil fuels has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, the amount of carbon dioxide generated in the production of the biofuel should not cancel out any relative savings that might result from its use. Second generation biofuels are seen as a solution in this respect, because they are produced from waste products generated from other processes. Under EC proposals, a 5% cap must be imposed on biofuels produced from energy crops. Therefore, the use of residual feedstocks such as Waste Cooking Oils (WCO) is desirable as an alternative to energy crops, and also as a potential solution towards reaching the 2020 goal of the Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC) for 10% biofuel usage in the transportation sector. Furthermore, channelling WCO into biofuels production also reduces their disposal in sewer systems, where they are contaminants that are costly to remove from wastewater.

Προηγμένες οξειδωτικές μέθοδοι απορρύπανσης νερού και αποβλήτων-Σύγχρονες τάσεις και προοπτικές εφαρμογών

Web picture 1Ο εντοπισμός στο υδατικό περιβάλλον ενός πλήθους τοξικών οργανικών ουσιών (γεωργικά φάρμακα, διαλύτες, χημικά βιομηχανικής προελεύσεως, συντηρητικά, φαρμακευτικές ουσίες, κ.ά.) από τη διάθεση ελλιπώς επεξεργασμένων και μη αστικών λυμάτων και βιομηχανικών αποβλήτων σε επιφανειακά νερά (λίμνες, ποτάμια), από τη γεωργική, την κτηνοτροφική και γενικότερα την ανθρώπινη δραστηριότητα, επιβάλλει ειδική μέριμνα για την επεξεργασία του πόσιμου νερού με στόχο την προστασία της ανθρώπινης υγείας. Η χρήση συμβατικών μεθόδων επεξεργασίας του πόσιμου νερού (όπως η κροκίδωση, η διήθηση με αμμόφιλτρα και η απολύμανση με χρήση χλωρίου) οδηγεί συνήθως σε μικρή έως ελάχιστη απομάκρυνση των παραπάνω συνθετικών οργανικών ουσιών. Επιπλέον, οι συνθετικοί αυτοί οργανικοί ρύποι παρουσιάζουν στην πλειονότητά τους ιδιαίτερη αντοχή απέναντι σε βιολογικές μεθόδους επεξεργασίας. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα παραπάνω, απαιτείται ανάπτυξη αποτελεσματικών τεχνολογιών απορρύπανσης του νερού, ικανών να παρέχουν καθαρό νερό απαλλαγμένο από ίχνη τοξικών μικρορυπαντών. Η εντατική έρευνα προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση οδήγησε τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες στην ανάπτυξη των "Προηγμένων Οξειδωτικών Μεθόδων Αντιρρύπανσης-ΠΟΜΑ" (Advanced Oxidation Processes-AOPs).

Best poster presentation award at the International Desalination Association IDA World Congress

Karanasiou, (Natural Resources and Renewable Energies Laboratory, Chemical Process and Energy Resources Institute, CERTH) N. P. Isaias and A. S. Al Rammah (Saudi Aramco), received the Best Poster Presentation Award at the International Desalination Association World Congress, which took place in Tianjin, China, October 20-25.

Best poster prize award on "Environmental Applications of Advanced Oxidation Processes" Conference

Prize 004The 1st poster prize for the presentation "Efficient Electro-Fenton Degradation of Pharmaceutically Active Compounds in a Novel Flow-Through Device" was awarded to Dr. Konstantinos Plakas, PostDoc researcher in NRRE/CPERI, in the context of the 3rd European Conference on Environmental Applications of Advanced Oxidation Processes (EAAOP3) that took place in Almeria, Spain, from 27 to 30 October 2013.
The poster presented the main research findings of "NHRON" project which is financially supported by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, Greek Ministry of Education, through the programme EPAN-II/ESPA: "SYNERGASIA", Project No. 09-SYN-42-630. The Laboratory of Inorganic Materials at CPERI /CERTH and the enterprise TEMAK A.E.T.E. are partners in this project.

Workshop: Novel methods for integrated exploitation of residues from processing agricultural products, November 19-20, CERTH

Solid residues and effluents from processing fruits (peaches, pomegranate, grapes, oranges etc) contain various compounds, some of them of great dietary and commercial value. However, such residues are either unexploited or become sources of serious environmental pollution.

In parallel, in the past two decades, significant progress has been made in the development of various novel types of methods; e.g. membrane technology, bio-technological methods, advanced oxidation processes, etc. These methods or combinations thereof allow the integrated treatment of natural by-products as well as of related polluting effluents toward the recovery of marketable products and/or energy and of clean water for reuse, thus effectively achieving environmental protection and sustainability.
